In the animal world, males are usually the ones who impose authority over females. However, in some species the opposite occurs, with the distinction that the leading females lack their physical attributes. We focus on the lives of three African matriarchs: an elephant, a hyena and a striped mongoose. They offer us a deeper appreciation for the role of leading females in wildlife.
